(ANSA) - Milan, May 20 - A former close aide of Premier Silvio Berlusconi, Marcello Dell'Utri, was acquitted Friday on charges of attempted extortion aggravated by Mafia conspiracy.
Also acquitted was Mafia boss Vincenzo Virga.
Prosecutors, who claimed the pair acted together, had asked for two years in jail.
Dell'Utri is a former business aide of Berlusconi's and a Senator in the premier's party, which he is credited with creating in 1993.
Dell'Utri's defence team voiced optimism that Friday's acquittal would help their case when his appeal against a seven-year conviction for helping the Mafia comes before the Court of Cassation, Italy's final appeals court.
